The long awaited 5th album of the post-hardcore/metal band The Amity Affliction dropped Friday, 12th of august after a long lead up of social media posts, song snippets and lyric releases. The band, which started up in 2003, hails from Gympie, a regional Queensland town with a population of roughly 20,000. For such a small town, they sure have produced one of the best metal bands out.
Even though the band has been around for so long and the members have led such changing lives (Joel Birch even had a baby recently!) they still manage to stick by their same old sound. This sound, though very enjoyable is much the same as their last album Let The Ocean Take Me. It consists of a strong set of angsty vocals reminiscent of early 2000's punk tracks, mashed together with incomprehensible screaming - which, for the record, somehow still manages to pack a punch with a whole lot of emotion.
They still follow the same themes- of loss, heartbreak and all round non-fun times. With that said, the album is still thoroughly pleasurable. Although each song has minimal variation, the title track This Could Be Heartbreak as well as Nightmare, Wishbone, O.M.G.I.M.Y and Tearing Me Apart are the stand out tracks. It’s definitely worth a listen but is not anything too different from the usual sound (which just might be of great delight to long-time fans).
